To own a home or a piece of land has always been called the “American Dream.” Over the past few centuries, settlers have come to build and make their homes here in this vast and beautiful country that we call the good ole USA.
For hundreds of years, these settlers have created businesses and generated an abundance of wealth. With freedom and liberty on their side, they have been able to do as they please, while making a name for themselves.
In this land of milk and honey, one could create a thriving business, acquire land, and then pass it on to the next generation. Well, that is unless you were born “Black”.
During these colonial times of exploration and exchanging goods for money, no product was more valuable than the African American slave. Stripped of their language, spiritual beliefs, culture, and free will, these former kings and queens were forced into a life of servitude without rights or compensation.
For the Truth And Justice For The Arnwine Family, justice means to make right anything that has been done to someone or a group of people that has caused harm, whether physically, financially, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, or any combination of these. In this case, we will discuss the injustice that was done to the descendants of slaves, in particular, the Arnwine descendants. During the 1800s, Albartis Arnwine owned many slaves. Among them were our ancestors. Rare, but noble, Albartis willed his remaining property to our ancestors before his death. Unfortunately, being that it was in Texas, and racial inequality was the norm, our ancestors did not receive the Albartis’ property that was rightfully theirs.
Through research and technological advances in DNA analysis, we were able to find out the information needed to seek justice for our family, the descendants of Albartis Arnwine and his slaves, our ancestors. In this case, justice for our family means that we are able to get the land and property that was promised to our great-grandmothers.
It would mean the world to us to step on the same soil where they worked day and night, often tired and broken. To receive that land and create a legacy where our family can now say, this is our land, would be a feeling that could only be described as surreal. To honor our ancestors by formally naming the land after them, and to give them the proper burial that they deserve, would be worth the fight that we will continue to endure.
In honor of our ancestors, we will seek justice with every fiber of our being. To our family, we will work together and make it happen.
